Chronic pain

A range of unpleasant bodily sensations experienced in some illnesses or after contact with a harmful substance. The role of pain is to alert the individual that something is wrong.

Techniques used to resolve this condition

GP or specialist consent is always required for any work in this area. The patient should continue to take prescribed medication unless the hypnotherapist is working closely with the physician with the aim of reducing medication. Constant pain needs a different approach from intermittent pain.

Constant pain can be relieved by developing an understanding of the value of pain and regression to the cause of the problem. Intermittent pain can be relieved using relaxation techniques and ‘anaesthesia’ of the area using hand in ‘ice bucket’ technique, to develop numbness and transfer that sensation to the affected area.

Outcomes and Benefits of hypnotherapy in this condition

Intermittent pain can respond after only one session. Chronic pain sufferers require more sessions to learn the technique of hypnotic relaxation. All clients respond better when CDs are used as an integral part of the treatment plan.

GP referral

Written consent for treatment from the client’s GP or specialist is essential before treatment can commence.

Typical duration of therapy

Intermittent pain - up to two sessions
Chronic pain - up to six sessions (over six month period) with CD support.
