Dental Phobia

Many people delay having dental treatment for months and sometimes years because of an irrational fear of attending a dental appointment. The fear can take several forms, for example being unable to open the mouth when arriving at the dental surgery, fear of the injection, choking sensation during treatment and the pain of the treatment. Much of this fear often goes back to childhood. However, though it’s fair to say that no one really enjoys a visit to the dentist, Hypnotherapy can make it an acceptable experience for those who find it a real problem.

Case history

A lady in her fifties came to see me as though she had avoided visiting her dentist, for over ten years, her teeth was now in a bad state and treatment had become essential. The main problem appeared to start when she sat in the chair. By re-framing the chair to be her most comfortable arm chair at home, where she always enjoyed relaxing, she was able to go through with her dental treatment without any apprehension or fear.

Techniques used to resolve this condition

Confidence building, re-framing earlier ‘bad’ experiences and ‘ice bucket’ anaesthesia are all techniques which can be used successfully.

Outcomes and Benefits of hypnotherapy in this condition

The outcome is usually very successful. Remember that the individual normally does have a real need to see the dentist and therefore is very keen to be a success.

GP referral

Not usually required.

Typical duration of therapy

Two sessions should be sufficient with CD support. An additional visit just before the dental appointment is especially beneficial.
