Exam anxiety
An irrational worry about passing exams affects people of all ages. This is a much bigger problem for the growing number of mature students who are seeking to catch up on qualifications they did not obtain in their youth, or for those seeking a career change.
Case history
A lady in her forties came to see me. She felt that her memory was not up to recalling details for her forthcoming examination and she also feared standing up in front of her fellow students to present the results of a project she had prepared as part of her assessment. In the first session she learnt to relax and immediately felt better about herself. In the second session by going back to her early days at school she recalled in such detail her primary and secondary education that she realised she still had a perfect memory. Confidence was given to help with the forthcoming presentation together with help on time management to assist her in ensuring she organised her revision. She was very successful in both the presentation and the exam.
Techniques used to resolve this condition
A range of techniques are used depending on the nature of the fear. Suggestions are made especially for the younger clients about spending enough time in preparation. The actual fear of the exam can be overcome by re-framing the exam location to a ‘home’ situation where the client always feels calm, relaxed and confident.
Outcomes and benefits of Hypnotherapy for this condition
The key to success here is an early start. Ideally the first session should take place six months before the exam. This gives ample opportunity to use all the benefits of hypnosis in the preparation e.g. relaxation, improved memory recall, better time management, goal achievement and a calm approach to the exam itself.
GP referral
Not usually.
Typical duration of therapy
Four sessions with CD support is usually sufficient.
