HIV issues
Some sexually active young people can experience an over whelming anxiety about becoming HIV positive, and sometimes a negative test is not sufficient to satisfy the individual that they are not infected. This anxiety affects both men and women.
Case history
A young girl, engaged to be married, was worried after an encounter with a stranger (non penetrative sexual activity) at a party. This concern stopped her doing her job effectively as she had become convinced that she was infected. Counselling was given to reassure her that the event did not involve a risk of contracting HIV and that her main problem was guilt. Hypnosis was then used to help resolve this issue and rebuild her confidence.
Techniques used to resolve this condition
Advice and counselling have a major role in recovery from HIV anxiety. Hypnosis is used to deal with the issue of guilt and rebuild confidence. Hypnosis can also be a very effective tool in learning how to cope with an HIV positive test result. Those clients who are HIV positive need non-judgemental support, to adjust to their changed health status and the confidence to deal with a stressful situation. Confidence building techniques are used in both situations.
Outcomes and Benefits of Hypnotherapy in this condition
Results are usually encouraging but can take several months to rebuild confidence. It is important that HIV testing takes place at the appropriate time to ensure unequivocal results.
