IBS
Dr George Lewith - referring to Dr. Peter Whorwell, a consultant gastro-enterologist at the Manchester Royal Infirmary - notes in his book ‘Natural Born Healers’, that hypnosis can be used to successfully treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS). IBS is a condition which appears to be stress related and effects many individuals who present with chronic gastric pain, a feeling of being ‘bloated’ in the abdomen, constipation and or diarrhoea.
Case history
A lady in her forties was referred to me from her GP, complaining of feeling bloated with periods of acute abdominal pain. She had been fully investigated to exclude any sinister cause of these symptoms. This lady appeared to be quite stressed and generally found relaxation difficult. Successful resolution of the problem was achieved after only one session using the technique of creating an image of a ‘free flowing’ stream and likening it a ‘free flowing’ bowel.
Techniques used to resolve this condition
Hypnotic relaxation and positive imagery of a ‘free flowing’ stream likening it to the bowel flow, which helps to resolve the feelings of congestion and pain, is often all that is needed to resolve the problem.
Outcomes and Benefits of hypnotherapy in this condition
With Hypnosis the need for muscle relaxing drugs can be eliminated and a person can feel in control of their bowels again.
GP referral
A doctor’s referral is always required as it is essential that other chronic bowel conditions are excluded.
Typical duration of therapy
Two sessions are usually sufficient required and this should be complimented by regular use of CD.
