Weight Loss
The cyclic experience of weight loss followed by regaining the lost kilos or pounds over a period of time can be demoralising and counter productive. A fundamental change of eating behaviours is required to ensure that permanent weight control is established. Hypnosis can be useful in initiating the essential inner motivation for long term change that can be the basis for effective weight management.
Case history
A university lecturer, aged fifty, came to my practice with a long standing weight problem. She had lost significant amounts of weight on previous occasions but had always put the weight back on again over a period of time. She had lost the motivation to diet fearing that it would all be pointless. Problems identified were ‘grazing’ at her workstation and ‘snacking’ when at home to relieve stress.
Techniques used to resolve this condition
Hypnosis can be effective as part of a holistic approach which includes:
- Use of a recognised weight loss programme.
- Menu planning
- Hypnotherapy to provide the essential inner motivation to continue with the programme. It can dissuade snacking, reduce portion size, and encourage slow eating. Positive imagery to show the client how they will look is also a very effective motivational tool.
Outcomes and Benefits of hypnotherapy in this condition
Using the above approach the client is more effectively supported in a weight management programme and is more likely to achieve a lasting satisfactory result.
GP referral
Not necessary, however, weight management is often advocated to assist in the control of other conditions such as cardiac problems, hypertension (high blood pressure) and mature onset diabetes.
Typical duration of therapy
Six sessions over a four month period.
